At Enotria&Coe, we are proud to work with Fontanafredda, one of Piedmont’s most historic and pioneering wine estates. Established in 1858 in Serralunga d’Alba from the union of King Vittorio Emanuele II and Rosa Vercellana, it has grown into a vibrant community centred on wine, land, and culture. Today the estate cultivates 120 hectares of certified organic vineyards, produces some of Italy’s most celebrated Barolos, and welcomes visitors to its unique Storytelling Village - a blend of winery, hospitality hub, cultural centre, and guardian of Langhe heritage.
Throughout its history, Fontanafredda has been a leader in innovation. It was the first to send Barolo beyond Italy’s borders in the 19th century, the first to use concrete fermentation tanks in Europe, and among the first to bottle single-vineyard Barolos, long before the practice became widespread. This pioneering spirit continues today, driven by a philosophy that marries tradition with forward-looking sustainability. At the core of Fontanafredda’s reputation are its Barolos. Iconic crus such as Vigna La Rosa, Vigna La Delizia, and Vigna La Villa are renowned for their elegance, longevity and sense of place, with recent vintages earning consistent acclaim from the world’s leading wine critics. These wines express the depth and diversity of the Langhe, while affirming Fontanafredda’s position as a benchmark producer of Barolo.
Equally defining is the estate’s commitment to sustainability, expressed through what it calls its Green Renaissance. In the vineyards, herbicides and synthetic fertilisers have been eliminated in favour of biodiversity-friendly practices. In the cellar and wider village, renewable energy, water recycling, solar power, and responsible packaging reduce environmental impact. From organic viticulture to biomethane-powered tractors, every decision reflects respect for the land and a vision of stewardship for future generations.
Fontanafredda’s commitment goes beyond the vineyard. The estate has become Italy’s first “Storytelling Village”, where wine is experienced alongside history, culture, gastronomy and hospitality. With restaurants led by Michelin-starred chef Ugo Alciati, boutique hotels, a cultural foundation, and even a woodland dedicated to contemplation, the estate has created a space where wine connects people to place and purpose. With deep roots in history and a bold vision for the future, Fontanafredda stands as both a symbol of Barolo’s prestige and a champion of sustainability in the Langhe. Its wines and its ethos embody a simple yet powerful philosophy: to honour tradition while shaping a greener, more inclusive tomorrow.
