Carrick Winery
Carrick, established over 25 years ago by Steve and Barbara Green, is a leading winery located on the Cairnmuir terraces in Bannockburn, Central Otago. Originally a landscape of wild thyme and briar roses, the vineyard has grown into one of the region’s most successful wine producers. Recently, Carrick entered a new chapter under the ownership of Tony and Alison Cleland, with Rosie Menzies continuing as the head winemaker. Known for its vibrant Pinot Noir, rich in colour and aromatic with notes of cherry and plum, Carrick also excels in producing Chardonnay with exceptional fruit purity.
Carrick’s vineyards are farmed organically, reflecting a commitment to sustainable viticulture that dates back to 2008. The winery’s unique approach combines traditional techniques with modern innovations, focusing on minimal intervention to express the distinct terroir of Central Otago. Carrick’s winemaking philosophy prioritises quality and character, with hand-harvesting, natural fermentations, and careful use of oak to enhance the texture and depth of their wines. Their Pinot Noir stands out for its complexity and concentration, while the Chardonnay is noted for its crispness and expressive fruit profile, offering a distinct point of differentiation in the New Zealand wine landscape.
Carrick's vineyards have been farmed organically since 2008 and are certified organic through Biogro. The company is also certified sustainable by SWNZ. Vineyard cover crops are planted annually to help naturally maintain the health of soils. The custom blend of seeds includes four different kinds of clover, mustard, radish, rape seed, buckwheat, and white oats. Carrick employs chickens in the vineyard to manage pests and aerate thethe soil, and organic materials are composted and spread throughout vineyards to increase provide nutrients for vines and mitigate water stress.
