Familia Deicas is one of Uruguay’s most prominent and innovative wineries, renowned for its pioneering spirit and commitment to quality. Founded in 1979 by Juan Carlos Deicas, who acquired the historic Establecimiento Juanicó winery, the family set out to transform Uruguayan wine by introducing modern techniques and focusing on noble French grape varieties, particularly those suited to the region’s unique terroir. Today, the winery is now in its third generation with Juan Carlos's son Fernando serving as president, and his grandson, the revered Santiago Deicas, as winemaker, reflecting a deep family-led dedication to viticulture.
Situated just 30km from the Atlantic Coast, Deicas produces wine from vineyards across some of Uruguay’s most diverse and exciting sites, emphasising sustainable practices and minimal intervention winemaking, including the use of clay amphorae and neutral oak. Their portfolio is celebrated for both its elegant reds - especially Tannat Uruguay’s signature grape - and their reputation for crafting fresh, engaging whites including Albariño, which showcase the winery’s focus on terroir and innovation. With a reputation for both tradition and experimentation, Familia Deicas is a leading ambassador for Uruguayan wine on the world stage, which commands you to look at this region very seriously. Those who thought Uruguay was just home to big, tannic Tannat, think again!
Santiago Deicas, a dynamic force in the world of winemaking, has solidified his position as a trailblazer in South America’s viticultural landscape. Born into the renowned Deicas winemaking family, Santiago’s ascent to prominence has been swift and marked by numerous accolades that underscore his exceptional contributions to the industry.
