Nonino
The Nonino family has been crafting premium artisanal grappa in Friuli, Italy, since 1897. In 1973, Benito and Giannola Nonino revolutionised the grappa industry by creating the world’s first single varietal grappa, known as Monovitigno®, using only the pomace of the Picolit grape. This bold move transformed grappa from a humble spirit into a globally respected distillate, inspiring many but matched by none in quality. Their commitment to innovation and tradition has earned them numerous accolades, including the prestigious Leonardo Prize for Italian Quality in 2003, recognising their role as true ambassadors of Italian distilling.
Nonino’s artisanal production methods set them apart from mass producers. They exclusively use copper batch steam stills designed by Benito Nonino, ensuring precise control over every distillation. This small-scale approach captures the purest flavours and aromas from each grape, resulting in refined, complex spirits. In 1984, inspired by a journey to Germany’s Black Forest, the family pioneered the world’s first whole-grape distillate, further expanding their legacy of innovation. Unlike industrial methods, their grappa is bottled without colour additives, maintaining the integrity of each varietal’s character.
