Tasting note
Vivacious Grenache from the Barossa Valley, savoury and complex, with red fruits including cranberries in the mouth and a nose-full of aniseed and spice.
Viticulture
Friend and vigneron Kevin Schild's grandfather and father planted these grenache vines with cuttings taken from another old Grenache vineyard - likely some of the earliest Grenache planted in the Barossa. The vineyard is in the sandy soils between the Vine Vale and Marananga parishes.
Vinification
Hand-picked Grenache from two vineyard areas undergoes open fermenter fermentation with 1/3 whole bunches cold soaking for 24 hours. After 6 days of maceration with selected yeast, it's pressed into 500L Puncheon French barrels for three months. Unfiltered and unfined, the wine captures the pure joy of barrel hall tasting, free from laboratory influences.
Food Match
This could be a red for summertime drinking on its own but equally perfect for wild mushrooms, charcuterie, and dishes with some complex herbs such as tarragon.
