Alvarinho
One of Portugal’s most celebrated white grapes, Alvarinho (Albariño in Spain) is the star of Vinho Verde. Known for its vibrant acidity and aromatic intensity, it delivers notes of citrus, peach, and tropical fruit, often with a saline minerality. While traditionally light and refreshing, premium examples can develop richness and aging potential, displaying complex layers of honey, nutty undertones, and a fuller body. Alvarinho thrives in the granitic soils of Monção and Melgaço, where warm days and cool nights enhance its balance. Best enjoyed with seafood, particularly shellfish, it is a benchmark for crisp, aromatic whites from the Iberian Peninsula.
