Bonarda
Bonarda, also known as Douce Noir, is Argentina’s second most planted red, offering juicy black cherry, blueberry, and floral notes. Often mistaken for an easy-drinking table wine, quality examples reveal impressive depth, velvety tannins, and bright acidity. Unlike Malbec’s boldness, Bonarda is fruit-driven and supple, making it an ideal food wine. When old vines are handled with care, it develops spice, tobacco, and cocoa complexity. In France’s Savoie region, where it originates, it is lighter, with red fruit and herbal notes. A grape of quiet versatility, Bonarda deserves more attention for its balance of elegance and vibrancy.
