A deeply pigmented German red, Dornfelder is one of the country’s most successful modern crossings, offering juicy blackberry, black cherry, and floral notes. Naturally high in anthocyanins, it has an inky color but remains soft in tannins, making it smooth and easy to drink. While traditionally light and fruit-forward, oak-aged examples reveal spice, dark chocolate, and smoky depth. It thrives in cooler climates, balancing ripe fruit with bright acidity. Often blended to add color and body, Dornfelder is gaining recognition as a standalone varietal for its bold yet approachable nature. Best enjoyed with charcuterie, roast pork, or grilled vegetables.
