Maturana Blanca
One of Rioja’s oldest known white varieties, Maturana Blanca was nearly extinct before recent efforts revived it. It produces fresh, citrus-driven wines with high acidity, making it a valuable blending component in white Rioja wines. Aromas of green apple, lemon zest, and white flowers dominate, with subtle herbal and saline notes reflecting its cool-climate origins. Naturally resistant to oxidation, it can age well, developing nutty and honeyed complexity over time. Though not as widely planted as Viura, it offers a refreshing counterpoint to richer whites, contributing brightness and energy. A fascinating rediscovery within Spain’s viticultural history.
