Tinta Negra

Long overshadowed by its nobler counterparts, Tinta Negra is Madeira’s workhorse grape - adaptable, prolific, and quietly indispensable. Once dismissed as ordinary, it has, in skilled hands, proven capable of remarkable expression across the island’s fortified wine spectrum. From off-dry to rich and sweet, it mirrors the styles of Sercial, Verdelho, Bual, and Malmsey, offering notes of roasted nuts, orange peel, and smoky caramel, laced with the island’s hallmark acidity. Though rarely bottled solo, its resilience in the steep, terraced vineyards and its ability to age gracefully in cask speak to a quiet versatility. A humble grape, elevated by tradition.
