Ugni Blanc
One of France’s most widely planted white grapes, Ugni Blanc (known as Trebbiano in Italy) is best known for its role in Cognac and Armagnac production. It produces light, high-acid wines with subtle citrus, green apple, and floral notes, often with a neutral character. While rarely exciting as a still wine, its naturally high acidity makes it ideal for distillation, contributing freshness and longevity to France’s famous brandies. In Italy, it appears in simple, everyday whites, but in the right hands, it can yield crisp, refreshing wines with surprising minerality and structure. A workhorse grape with hidden potential.
