The association of widows or ‘veuves’ and sparkling wine extends beyond Champagne, south into Burgundy where Veuve Ambal, the leading producer of Crémant de Bourgogne, is based. Marie Ambal married a Parisian banker and, when he died, she returned to her home village of Rully in Côte Chalonnaise to continue her family involvement in wine. Today, Veuve Ambal has 230 hectares of vineyards in Burgundy and is one of the most pristine wineries in the region.
