Pinotage
South Africa’s signature red grape, Pinotage is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, developed in the 1920s. It produces deeply colored, bold wines with flavors of black cherry, plum, and spice, often with smoky, earthy undertones. In some expressions, notes of coffee and chocolate emerge, a result of oak aging. While early examples were criticized for excessive bitterness, modern winemaking has refined its style, emphasizing balance and fruit purity. Capable of producing everything from light, juicy reds to robust, age-worthy wines, Pinotage reflects South Africa’s unique terroir and winemaking heritage. It remains a polarizing yet iconic variety.
