Tinta Francisca
A lesser-known Portuguese red, Tinta Francisca is traditionally used in Port wine production, contributing elegance and softness to blends. Thought to be related to Pinot Noir, it produces lighter-bodied wines with floral aromas, bright red fruit, and delicate spice. While rarely bottled as a single varietal, it plays a role in enhancing the finesse and aromatic complexity of Douro wines. Its gentle tannins and balanced acidity make it an excellent blending grape, though its low yields have limited its cultivation. As interest in indigenous Portuguese varieties grows, Tinta Francisca is gaining recognition for its potential in refined, elegant wines.
