Château Haut-Bages Libéral, a historic Pauillac estate, traces its roots to the early 18th century when the Liberal family, successful wine brokers, began acquiring prime vineyards neighbouring Château Latour and Château Pichon Baron. Classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux classification, the estate was revived in 1983 by the Villars family, and is now managed by Claire Villars Lurton, who has driven significant technological advancements and a strong commitment to sustainability.
The estate’s 30 hectares of vines are primarily planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, reflecting the classic Left Bank profile. The grapes are hand-picked and vinified separately in stainless steel and concrete vats, with tank volumes precisely matched to individual plots for precise fermentation control. This approach maintains the distinctive character of each parcel, resulting in wines known for their structure, complexity, and ageing potential.
Sustainability is a core focus at Château Haut-Bages Libéral, driven by Claire Villars Lurton’s commitment to responsible viticulture. The estate has undergone a comprehensive transformation, embracing organic and biodynamic practices to enhance vineyard health and reduce environmental impact, while preserving the unique Pauillac terroir for future generations.
