Viura
The primary white grape of Rioja, Viura (known as Macabeo in Catalonia) produces fresh, citrusy wines when young but gains remarkable depth with oak aging. Unoaked expressions offer green apple, pear, and floral notes, while traditional barrel-aged Rioja whites develop nutty, vanilla, and honeyed complexity. In sparkling Cava, it contributes finesse and crispness to blends. Naturally high in acidity, it can age gracefully, evolving into structured, oxidative styles reminiscent of fine white Burgundy. Though often overshadowed by Spain’s more aromatic whites, well-made Viura is among the country’s most elegant and age-worthy white wines.
