Arnaldo Caprai, a successful textiles merchant, made a bold career change in 1971 when he purchased five hectares of land in Umbria that captivated his imagination. Over the next 17 years, he gradually acquired more vineyards until he passed the reins to his son, Marco Caprai, in 1988. In the 1990s, Marco partnered with the University of Milan and invested heavily in advanced scientific and technological research. This led to the discovery of new clones of the Sagrantino grape, which is native to Umbria. As a result of this pioneering work, Caprai has become recognized as the preeminent producer of Sagrantino di Montefalco, made exclusively from 100% Sagrantino grapes. Marco Caprai’s passion for science and innovation continues to guide the winery’s practices, including a rigorous approach to sustainability that involves detailed reporting on CO2 emissions and increasing biodiversity in the vineyards. Today, Arnaldo Caprai Winery stands as a shining example of how cutting-edge research and traditional winemaking techniques can work together to produce exceptional wines while preserving the environment for future generations.
