Montepulciano
One of Italy’s most widely planted red grapes, Montepulciano thrives in Abruzzo and the Marche, where it produces deeply colored, fruit-forward wines. Blackberry, black cherry, and plum dominate, often with hints of tobacco, spice, and cocoa. Naturally high in tannins and acidity, it can range from easy-drinking to highly structured, age-worthy styles. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, the most famous expression, offers richness and depth while remaining approachable. When handled carefully, it balances boldness with freshness, making it a versatile food wine. Though sometimes confused with the Tuscan town of Montepulciano (which produces Vino Nobile), this grape has its own distinct identity.
