Over Christmas in 1980, a Swiss family called the Widmers travelled to Tuscany and fell in love with a beautiful estate owned by an elderly English gentleman who was looking to sell. Incorporating what was historically two estates called Brancaia and Poppi, it is in the heart of Chianti Classico. The Widmers moved quickly and soon won their first award for the 1983 Chianti Classico. Their daughter, Barbara Widmer, took over as winemaker in 1998. This was also the year in which the Widmers acquired the Maremma estate, which was released as the Ilatraia in 2002, scoring 95 points in Wine International. Their top wine, Il Blu, quickly became a classic for Super-Tuscan fans around the world.
