Merlot
Merlot is famed for its supple tannins and lush, plummy fruit. At its best—such as in Pomerol—it offers depth, elegance, and velvety texture, with notes of black cherry, mocha, and cedar. In warmer regions, it leans toward riper, juicier expressions, while cooler climates enhance its herbal, graphite-like nuances. It is widely planted and adaptable, often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to add softness and approachability. Though sometimes dismissed as too easygoing, well-crafted Merlot shows remarkable complexity and aging potential. With its smooth structure and balanced acidity, it pairs effortlessly with roasted meats, mushrooms, and creamy cheeses.
