Sustainable Packaging at Enotria&Coe: Driving Positive Change from Bottle to Box

At Enotria&Coe, we’re committed to shaping a responsible future for the drinks industry, and we realise that this must start from within. Our newly outlined Packaging Charter sets a clear and ambitious roadmap to reduce our environmental impact through smarter, cleaner, and more circular packaging practices.

Tackling Packaging & Plastic Waste: Our Four-Pillar Approach

We’ve adopted a straightforward yet impactful mantra when it comes to packaging: Remove. Reduce. Recycle. Reuse.

Every initiative we undertake is grounded in this principle, and we are actively working to:

  • Remove unnecessary and non-recyclable materials.
  • Reduce the volume and weight of packaging where elimination isn’t feasible.
  • Recycle all remaining materials, pushing for increased use of post-consumer content.
  • Encourage Reuse wherever viable across our supply chain.

Our Commitments in Action

Our packaging overhaul is built around five core commitments, developed in collaboration with our customers, suppliers, and industry experts:

  1. Transition to Lightweight Glass Bottles
  2. Glass bottles are the single largest contributor to the carbon footprint of wine. We are cutting weight - from an average of 550g to under 420g per bottle. This reduction could lower emissions by over 25% and help reduce rising compliance costs linked to producer responsibility regulations.
  3. Use of Recycled and Sustainably Sourced Materials
  4. We're increasing the recycled content of all our packaging, especially glass, which when made with recycled cullet, saves energy, reduces emissions, and supports a UK-based circular economy. Our goal is also to ensure that all paper and board components are either FSC/PEFC certified or 100% recycled.
  5. Elimination of Single-Use Plastics
  6. Single-use plastic has no place in our future. We aim to eliminate it entirely from our packaging and replace it with viable, sustainable alternatives. In cases where no alternative exists, we are increasing recycled content to at least 30% to align with - and avoid incurring additional costs under - the UK Plastic Packaging Tax.
  7. Exploration of Low-Carbon Packaging Alternatives
  8. We’re continuously exploring innovative, lower-impact packaging formats to stay ahead of environmental and regulatory demands.
  9. Promoting Supply Chain Transparency
  10. We’re asking critical questions of our partners - about recycled content, local sourcing, renewable fuels, and emissions targets - to ensure that every packaging decision aligns with our sustainability goals.

Single-Use Plastics: A Targeted Strategy

We’re focusing efforts on high-impact areas to eliminate single-use plastics, including:

  • Switching to paper-based or recycled plastic tape.
  • Increasing recycled content in pallet wrap and shrink wrap.
  • Removing or replacing plastic capsules.
  • Phasing out PVDC liners in screwcaps for more sustainable alternatives.
  • Upgrading label liners to recycled PET or glassine, while ensuring labelling waste is recycled.
